Irate Panda Boss is putting on a screening.

Downtown at a small gallery, Chronos, we've been asked to put on a screening within Friendly Venture's two night event.

What that means is, for two nights, December 16th and 17th from 8-9, we will be putting on a one hour shorts and music video program featuring some really good work from the past year. In many cases the films are premieres, or at least screening for the first time in Los Angeles.

(The same films show both nights).

However seats are very limited, so please RSVP as soon as you can.

We've also been given a couple walls, and rooms within the gallery to put up some work, which will be on view from December 16th - 23rd. (Appointment only.)

After the screening ends, there will be live music that goes on late into the night.

Likewise Echo Park Zymurgy will have home brewed beer, so bring cash.

All of this is in conjunction with, and put together by Friendly Venture, so come check out what they have going on, they are putting some work up in the gallery space, and have programed the musical entertainment.

Should be fun nights.

PLANT MAGIC MAN explodes.

The shortest and last of the DOGSON 2008-2010 RECORDINGS series, is an explosion of noise, rhythms and melodies, that rips through it's 7 minute run time.

The title track, "When We Were Trying to Decide if We Were The Same Or Not" is a pounding rhythmic song, layered in clangs, dreamy guitar, and shimmering loops underneath erie splintering vocals that can feel as if they can barely be held together.

The second half of the album is broken into "the letter songs" DHJSK and SDKJA.

DHJSK starts with sputtering hi-hats, and disparate clangs before a piano chimes in, while guitars accent in a echo-y bath of distortion. Maracas and vocals fill in the space, while the sound bounces around underneath the brief one line lyrics.

The piano heavy album closer SDKJA, starts organically enough with trademark Plant Magic Man vocals before exploding into a mysterious chorus of child like voices. From there the song ignites into a steady electronic propelled cacophony, with a nice surprise start stop finish that shows of some Hip-Hop influences.

All in all the album shows the Plant Magic Man arrow pointing up, and finds him at his most layered, rhythmic and complex.

PLANT MAGIC MAN - RAINY SEASON (2010)

Ringing out in silence, a lone guitar starts PCH 1988 the first song from PLANT MAGIC MAN’s RAINY SEASON (recorded in Janurary 2010). Utterances, and creaky shutters collide, building to the choral chant of “Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie” rolling under the main lyrics of the song while off kilter drums sound off, along with echoing xylophone to create a layer of sweet, almost juvenile chaos.

RAINY SEASON continues to demonstrate the evolution of PLANT MAGIC MAN, as it marries the acoustic guitar, piano, and found audio King’s Parade era sound, in a collection of tight pointed songs, were composition and song writing rises to the fore front, while still allowing for the sonic experimentation that so obviously interests the PLANT MAGIC MAN. In short the album finds PLANT MAGIC MAN looking back.

EARTH MAKING SOUNDS is a sweet folk inspired love song, that is elevated by an outstanding dreamy keyboard riff that runs through the song, connecting the earnest, most straight forward, and perhaps tender lyrics to date in the Plant Magic Man catalog.

The tribal beat of FUNNY MAN, collides with canned laughter and a onslaught of whirling found audio while the guitar stubbornly plucks it’s notes, and eventually pianos pound out sharp accents to the rhythmic song. The short song, acts almost like an experimental interlude to bridge the gap to ZOE, a song that pairs nicely with PCH 1988. Lone guitar notes ring out above the fray of sounds that interact nicely in chaos until the song is pulled into a twist that creates a jaunty rhythm that wraps up the song in a left turn.

Finally the eponymous track starts off as if the album will end on an experimental, Gospel Noise Choir type mood-setting closer, until nearly a minute in that a deep, distant beat drums up the maracas and cascading rain like sounds that lay the groundwork for thin wiry vocals crooning over it all.

Coming in at less than 14 minutes the album, acts as a kind of recapitulation, a perfect synthesis of past and future Plant Magic Man, a successfully varied outing that sets a high mark, and again teases at what’s yet to come.

PLANT MAGIC MAN goes electric.

After 3 albums of layered acoustic folk inspired tracks, heavy with pianos, small drums and loose rattling acoustic guitar strings the fourth album from PLANT MAGIC MAN (recorded in October 2009) starts off with an tight beating electronic drum front and center, while shimmering tremolo electric guitars duel underneath, announcing the next step of Plant Magic Man sound.

While Gospel Noise Choir seemed more of a sonic experimentation and seemingly signaled a transition into more free form noise inspired music, Daniel Kaufman's Album demonstrates a tightness of song composition, production and seemingly a new found confidence in song writing. Gone are much of the experimental sound tendencies, such as spoken word samples, and extended sonic intros, in it's place are hand claps, swirling oscillating electric guitar, and pop-like hooks and melodies.

After setting the tone with the album opener "Green Light", the album, coming in at a little over 12 minutes, breezes by. "Of Local Heritage" seems like the perfect transition song, a King's Parade era song gone electric. "WELL DIVERS" the albums ballad if there was to be one, with a soft subtle bass drum beat, over which a subdued vocal melody again lays on top of two bright guitars and hand claps. Finally the album closer "Rap Song Street Song" an announcement of what's yet to come from Plant Magic Man, starts simply enough and builds until breaking into far off drum beat, that propels the song to the album's end.

Irving Kershner dead at 87.

Director of the best Star Wars film "The Empire Strikes Back".

He was the one talking sense into George, and is the one who wanted Han Solo to die.

(Also directed Robocop 2)

"When I finally accepted the assignment, I knew that it was going to be a dark film, with more depth to the characters than in the first film," he said. "It took a few years for the critics to catch up with the film and to see it as a fairy tale rather than a comic book."
Kershner said he had only one sharp disagreement with Lucas. The script originally called for the heroine, Princess [Leia], to tell space pilot Han Solo "I love you" and for him to reply "I love you, too."
"I shot the line and it just didn't seem right for the character of Han Solo," Kershner said.
Instead, actor Harrison Ford improvised the reply: "I know."
Lucas wanted the original line but after test previews agreed to leave in Ford's reply, which has gone on to be one of the best-known lines in the series.

I remember reading this short story and really liking it.

Even running through my mind how I'd film it.

This however seems AWFUL. Directed by Brother Cuaron.

For my money the best adaptation of Murkami's work is Jun Ichikawa's "Tony Takitani" (2004).

I saw it in theaters when visiting my girlfriend in Berkeley, in a tiny post porn theatre.

The floors were still sticky.
