Elizabeth chose typing classes.
It is certainly something unique to our generation as we must be amongst the first to have had a computer based typing class. Even today I am not certain that the computer classes held in elementary school are focusing mainly on typing, I would imagine they are more education, and researched based.
The classes were essentially extensions of old time-y 50's type writing classes except, for me, a cheshire like 8 bit cat taught me how. (Cat Paws anyone?)
"I haven't thought about words per minute since 7th grade back when we had computer labs, and learned how to type more efficiently from Mavis Beacon...until last week when I found http://www.typingtest.com/. I've been trying to bring up my wpm for God knows why. The highest I've gotten is 60 wpm.. with 100% accuracy though. I keep on wasting time by backspacing. It kills.
