Essentially Jonathan Glazer's first project since, 2004's Birth here is "Treat Me Like Your Mother". I love how conceptually clean/tight it is, love the color palate and location however the issue that I always struggle with in music videos is concept tightness vs. entertainment value. I think the song, and thus the video, might be a little too long here, however it is definitely worth checking out. (For the record I tend to lean towards videos that are conceptually strong, even if they are boring however the true greats usually find a way to combine the two. )
(Turns out the sister company of the Director's Bureau made this.)
All in all, bring on the next Jonathan Glazer feature.
What say you? Is the video good, bad? Disappointing? Exciting?
If the video is taken down by the time you read this go here.
I like it.
ReplyDeleteIt's cathartic. I've always wanted to do that.
I like the first long tracking shot. I think for a second it gets boring, but then I just anticipate the next step more, "What's going to happen next!?! Why does he have a gun!?!" I think that's the point. It works.
Like I said I love conceptually clean videos, I find myself defending this video when people say they were disappointed.
ReplyDeleteIt's one of those things that might be too long, or boring at times but when you look back on it you understand it conceptually and that makes it stronger. Because once you see it all, you understand as being one tight thing, as opposed to several perhaps entertaining short pieces.
I don't know if it stands up next to his work on that DVD series of music video directors, but i did enjoy it. When you mention the tightness, I think thats what holds it together for me in regards to the "slow" moments of the video. And i think a lot of the tightness comes from his awareness of the rhythm of the song. Hes doing little subtle reinforcements, but not Huge Action Check This Out moments, i dig.
